How Do I File an Inspector General Complaint?

When you are dealing with an issue at work involving federal employee misconduct or Prohibited Personnel Practices (PPP), you will need to file a report with the Officer of Inspector General. If you believe you are dealing with a federal workplace issue that warrants OIG interference, then you need to file a complaint with their office.

The OIG often handles complaints involving any of the following:

  • Abuse of authority

  • Conflicts of interest

  • Criminal activity

  • Discrimination

  • False claims

  • Fraud

  • Mismanagement

  • Theft

  • Whistleblower retaliation issues

A complaint with the Office of Inspector General will generally follow these key steps:

  1. Discussing your case with an attorney. Dealing with these types of investigations and complaints can be challenging and complex, which is why it is necessary to see an experienced attorney about your case. A legal professional with experience dealing with federal workplace issues will be able to determine whether your circumstances warrant an official complaint. And, if you do need to go forward with your complaint, an attorney can help you through each step of the process.

  2. Failing the claim. Once you’ve determined that you have a valid complaint, your next order of action should be to fill out the right papers to file the claim. You might need to consult with your supervisor or the Inspector General to learn more about where to file your complaint, and how to visit an office if necessary.

  3. Conducting an investigation. After you have filed your claim, the issue is in the hands of the OIG. If they decide your case qualifies, they will launch an investigation or audit to look into the issue you brought to their attention. During this time, there isn’t often much you should be doing, the OIG will let you know if they need any further information.
